Idro is a mountain comune full of sailors. It lies at the southern end of the lake that bears its name, in the Valle Sabbia, and it is a scattered comune: the town hall is not at Idro but in the hamlet of Crone. There, on the lake, is a branch of the national association of Italian sailors, and the little harbour is named after Mario Tonni, born in 1930 and died in 2005, the only admiral the Val Sabbia has given the Italian Navy. At the naming ceremony, in 2011, the mayor invited twenty-five of his colleagues from the valley.
To the lake, for that matter, the village has always entrusted its communications. Then the rails came too, but because of the war: between 1917 and 1931 Idro was the northern terminus of the Tormini-Vestone-Idro tramway, whose last stretch had been built during the First World War for military needs. Of the churches, the oldest stands at Pieve Vecchia and is called Santa Maria ad Undas: to the waves.
