Treviso Bresciano

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 566 · Postal code: 25070

This village voted itself its own name. The old appellation was Caeys, a Lombard word meaning wood, and in the older writings the place appears under different forms — Caci or Cazzi, from a Latin Cassizio, or Cuzzi, or Cazzarium. Then, on the twenty-fourth of May of 1532, the community resolved on a new name: Treviso Bresciano. It has nothing to do with the Veneto city: that Treviso comes from the Celtic tarvos, the bull, while this one seems to come from the Latin tresvici, that is three villages. And the first historical documents do speak of three villages: Vico, whose ancient name was Cazzi di sopra; Trebbio, whose name was Cazzi di sotto; and Facchetti, called so because the households living there all bore that surname — a village named after the family name of the people inside it.

The arms tell the same story in three figures. The three towers are the three villages. The fallow deer recalls how much wood there was round here and what it was for: this whole territory was the hunting reserve of the monasteries of Leno and of Santa Giulia and of the bishop of Brescia, and between the tenth and the fifteenth century there were frequent hunts here for bear, fallow deer, roe deer and ibex. The ears of wheat, finally, are the farming that came afterwards. Treviso Bresciano is a scattered comune of the Valle Sabbia: its houses are spread across the territory instead of being gathered into a single centre, which is exactly what its name has always said. The arms and the banner were granted in 1990.
