Bondone

Province: Trento · Region: Trentino-South Tyrol · Population: 668 · Postal code: 38080

Here everyone was a charcoal burner. For eight months of the year the men went off across the Trentino and the Brescia country to make charcoal, and the village stayed almost empty. The trade is written into article 1 of the comune's statute, and on the coat of arms there is the poiot, the stack of wood turning into charcoal.

The name comes from Bondù, which means the place where you take shelter at night when there is danger. In 1312 a notary counted twenty-six hearths, that is about a hundred and thirty people; the community's statutes are of 1401 and were written at Castel Romano, before a Lodron. From 1928 to 1953 Bondone did not exist: it was inside Storo.
