Cellatica

In 1806 the shipping contractor Ottavio Boroni had a palace built for himself at Cellatica in the shape of a ship: a little tower in the middle and portholes opening in the walls. The village, which has no sea at all, owes its name instead to wine: Cellatica is thought to come from cella, perhaps the wine cellar of a monastery, and in the documents it has been Zellatica, Cella, Villa and Celadèga. To this day its hills give a red wine that bears the name of the comune.

The sanctuary of the Madonna della Stella, of 1539, straddles three comuni — Cellatica, Concesio and Gussago — and over the years this has produced a certain amount of dispute over who owns it. It was built after a miracle: at the place called la Selva, so the story goes, the Madonna and Child appeared to a deaf-mute shepherd, healed him and told him she wanted a church on that spot. In the little chapel of the alpine troops, instead, the altar holds a handful of sand from the Libyan desert and a handful of Russian earth.
