Collebeato

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,698 · Postal code: 25060

The village used to be called Cobiato, and the name it bears today was given to it by a poet. In 1512, when the French troops besieging Brescia laid waste to these hills as well, Mariotto Martinengo wrote a short poem entitled "The lament of the god Pan for the ruin of the blessed hill": it was the first time anyone had used that form. It caught on, and from the eighteenth century Collebeato is the name that appears on the maps.

In 1910 the industrialist Filippo Rovetta had American peach saplings brought from Louisiana, and nine years later he began large-scale production, breaking new ground north of the village. The other landowners followed his example, and Collebeato became the leading producer of peaches in the Brescia country, with more than ninety varieties; the peach festival is still held today. What made the orchards decline, in the nineteen-sixties, was a cement works opened on the same ground.
