Concesio

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 14,813 · Postal code: 25062

The name probably comes from concaesa, the cutting of coppice woods: the land between Brescia and the Val Trompia was rich in timber, used for roofing houses and for winter fuel. The river that crosses it, the Mella, takes its name from the Latin mel, honey, perhaps for the quality and abundance that once marked it. From here came Rodolfo da Concesio, a medieval magistrate, one of the promoters of the resistance to Barbarossa and a signatory of the Peace of Constance.

Until the early nineteen-sixties the commune had no coat of arms: different cloths were used for the different parts of the village. The matter came up in 1963, when Giovanni Battista Montini, born here, was elected pope as Paul VI and the eyes of the world settled on the place. The arms that resulted are quartered and bring together four families: the Montini with hills and lilies, the Lodron with the lion, the Belucanti with the tree, the Caprioli with the roebuck; which branch of the Caprioli that last quarter belongs to is still argued over. The house where the pope was born had belonged to the Lodron counts, and the Montini bought it in 1863.
