Lavenone

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 607 · Postal code: 25074

The arms of Lavenone never had a decree of concession, and two different versions of them go about. The historian Ugo Vaglia, in 1961, described them thus: above, a gold rampant lion on blue; below, a mountain, and at the top a gold star of eight rays. The emblem the comune actually prints on its documents, and which is written into its statute, is another one: a green mountain, a gold star of six rays, and on the chief a blue lion on a silver field. So the village has two images of itself, and no paper that says which of the two is the right one.

Lavenone stands on the right bank of the Chiese, a little below Lake Idro, and its territory climbs into the mountains as far as Presegno, which until the end of the seventeen hundreds was a comune of its own. The village appears among the comuni of the Valle Sabbia already in the Visconti survey of 1385. In 1853 it had a little over eight hundred inhabitants and a municipal council without an office of its own. The parish church of San Bartolomeo the apostle, built at the end of the seventeen hundreds, was consecrated in 1840. And between 1917 and 1931 there was a tram stop here: the last stretch of that line, from Vestone to Idro, had been built during the First World War for military needs, and once the war was over it carried people for a few years, then closed.
