Feast of Saint Zeno
📅 Every year, on 9 December
On 9 December Maclodio celebrates its patron Saint Zeno; the town is also known for its re-enactment, held every five years, of the famous battle fought there in 1427.
On 12 October 1427, in the fields of this village, the Republic of Venice beat the Duchy of Milan and took the Brescia country. The battle of Maclodio entered literature — Alessandro Manzoni tells it in Il Conte di Carmagnola — and painting: Francesco Bassano painted it in 1590 in a fresco in the Doge's Palace in Venice. The village has never let it go. In the municipal arms there are two knights clashing, the one on the left for Milan and the one on the right for Venice, with the lioness of Brescia holding a cob of maize and the words Pugna praeclara; on the walls, in several places, there are paintings devoted to the fight; and every five years the battle is re-enacted, as has been done since 1984.
The castle to the west of the village already existed at the beginning of the fifteenth century and came out of the battle half destroyed: it was the Chizzola who put it back on its feet, and what one sees today is a sixteenth-century tower and a rectangular manor house, surrounded by a moat once fed by the springs and crossed by a bridge. In the seventeenth century it passed to the Ducco, feudal lords of Trenzano. Water, for that matter, is in the name too: Maclodio may come from the Latin macula, meaning scrubland, or from the Celtic macl, which means a marshy place. In the church of San Zenone, in the middle of the village, there are frescoes of 1506.
