Mairano

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,329 · Postal code: 25030

The oldest thing in Mairano is the pattern of the fields. This part of the plain was centuriated by the Romans, that is divided by the square into regular lots, and from there comes the name too: from fundus Marianus, the farm of Marianus. On that grid the scattered farmsteads still live, which here have names that sound like nicknames: Babbiò, Canino, Feniletto, Tesette and Godi, called i Gucc in dialect. To the north lies the hamlet of Pievedizio, which carries a pieve in its name. Of the world that worked those fields there remains the Museum of Peasant Civilisation.

Here too the boundaries have moved, but on a football pitch: in 1976 the Unione Sportiva Mairano merged with the Trenzanese of Trenzano and out came a team called Tre-Mairano, which lasted until 1983, when it was dissolved and the village took back its own name and its own club. Three thousand three hundred and twenty-nine inhabitants in the province of Brescia, a kilometre from the provincial road towards Cremona, with the Seriola Molina brushing the village on the east.
