The arms of Rezzato show the bust of a crowned king: he is Zato, the legendary ruler to whom local tradition traces the town's name by folk etymology. The sounder explanation is less theatrical — a curtis vetus turned royal court, the Regiadum where the emperor broke his journeys, still recalled by the Curvione district near the station — but the king stayed on the shield, with the lily and the toothed band of the old Guelph allegiance. In 1299 bishop Berardo Maggi met the townsmen's requests with a decree declaring the village born; in 1548 the nobleman Giacomo Chizzola opened here the first academy of agronomy.

The Botticino marble quarries next door made Rezzato the village of stonecutters from the sixteenth century on: in 1839 Rodolfo Vantini, the architect who had already designed its cemetery and town hall, founded a school for stone carvers and drew the building meant to house it, opened only after his death. On 22 March 1848, called out by the bells, volunteers and peasants from the villages around raised barricades at Ponte and captured a convoy of 163 Austrian soldiers bound for Brescia; the echo of the affair convinced general Schwarzenberg to capitulate. Since 2022 Rezzato has held the title of city.
