Milzano

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,799 · Postal code: 25020

The plague of 1630 took Milzano from more than a thousand inhabitants to 460. The dead were buried around a chapel built on the foundations of the old pieve, the one that stood near the Mella: a church the river had destroyed several times with its floods and which in that very year was pulled down for good, replaced by the new church of Sant'Andrea.

The village has always been afraid of the Mella: as early as 1549 the built-up area had been rebuilt higher up to escape the floods. The name too comes from the river: Milzano is the latinisation of a Gallic term in which Mil stands for the Mella and char means the forts the Celts built beside watercourses. Only with the land reclamation of the second half of the nineteenth century did the farmsteads, the arable land and better living conditions arrive. In 1928 Milzano was aggregated to Pralboino, and became a comune again in 1948; the coat of arms, on the other hand, was never granted: the comune simply uses it.
