Pavone del Mella

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,838 · Postal code: 25020

The water that irrigates the fields of Pavone did not arrive here by chance: the Santa Giovanna channel was dug in 1509 to drain the marshes of the Ghedi country, and the water taken from there has since served to wet the lands of Leno, Pavone del Mella and Pralboino. The rest is done by the river that gives the village its second name, the Mella, which marks the boundary with Cigole, and by the ditches that rise from the springs scattered through the fields.

They are big fields, sown mostly with maize, with farms of pigs, poultry and dairy cattle: that is how the Brescian plain works. Between 1914 and 1933 the village had a station on the Brescia-Ostiano tramway, and it was no ordinary stop: from there the branch line to Gambara split off. Two thousand eight hundred and thirty-eight inhabitants in the province of Brescia, on the left bank of the Mella.
