Pralboino

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,912 · Postal code: 25020

The name says meadow of Alboin, the Lombard king, but that is not what the village was called. In the imperial diplomas and the bulls of the abbey of Leno, between the eleventh century and the first half of the twelfth, the place is Castrum Novum cum ecclesia Sancti Andree: a fortified settlement guarding the left bank of the Mella. Pratum Alboini appears only in the second half of the twelfth century in notarial documents, and scholars explain it as an ennoblement: in those years there circulated reconstructions of Lombard history that would later prove unreliable, and the village hooked itself onto them by taking the name.

Between 1942 and 1943 Pralboino was one of the places designated for the free internment of foreign Jewish refugees: eighteen people from Germany and the Balkans stayed there. With the German occupation the deportations began: on the seventh of January 1944 four of the former internees were arrested here and sent to Auschwitz. The others went into hiding, and almost all of them survived until the Liberation. Two thousand nine hundred and twelve inhabitants in the province of Brescia.
