Feast of Saint Vitalis
📅 Every year, on 28 April
On 28 April Seniga, a municipality of 1,581 inhabitants in the province of Brescia, celebrates its patron Saint Vitalis, to whom the town's church is dedicated.
In the summer of 1947 there was a young Polish priest at Seniga whom the villagers called don Carlo. He was Karol Wojtyła. In 1946 he had been allowed to go to Rome for his licentiate examination in theology; then a communist government came to power in Poland and going back became impossible. With nowhere to go, he was invited by a fellow seminarian, don Francesco Vergine, who came from Seniga, to stay here with his family. A great cycling enthusiast, from here he made many outings across the lower Brescia plain and the Cremona country. In June 1948 he went back to Rome for his doctorate in theology.
The village stands where the Mella ends: south-east of the hamlet of Regona, in open countryside, the river flows into the Oglio and ceases to exist as itself. The Oglio, in its turn, was for centuries a state border, between the Republic of Venice and the Duchy of Milan: the two banks were linked by an old ferry-port that also served as the customs post between the two states. Seniga, on the Brescia bank, had a castle and a settlement well defended by walls. Today its territory lies within the regional park of the Oglio Nord.
