Pertica Bassa

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 686 · Postal code: 25078

The name of this village is a monument to someone who never came home. It comes from the Lombard custom by which the family of a warrior fallen or lost in battle far from home would raise a pole, a pertica, topped by the image of a dove turned towards the place where it had happened. There was no body, and so a pole was planted that pointed in the right direction. The settlement that grew around such a marker kept the name, with Bassa added to distinguish it from the Pertica that lies higher up.

The municipal territory is also a fragment of an institution larger and far older than itself: the Universitas Perticae Vallis Sabbi, a supra-communal body that functioned from 1382 to 1797, more than four centuries, and that held together what is now Pertica Alta and the villages of Bisenzio and Presegno, today part of the municipality of Lavenone. With the end of the Republic of Venice the Universitas ended too, and its territory was cut into the pieces one sees on the map today: two municipalities called Pertica and two hamlets belonging to a third.
