Quinzano d'Oglio

Province: Brescia · Region: Lombardy · Population: 6,390 · Postal code: 25027

The name comes from the Quinti, a Roman family with land here; d'Oglio, after the river that divides the town from the province of Cremona, was added in the nineteenth century. The partly spring-fed Savarona crosses the centre and gives its name to a local park of intermunicipal interest; the Chiavicone, built in 1575 under Venice, regulates its water. The dense water network explains ground anything but flat, in the middle of the Po plain.

The arms are silver, with a red castle with Ghibelline merlons and an eagle in natural colours on its tower; there was a real castle here, built by the Martinengo around the tenth century, near the church. In the Second World War the town was a free-internment locality for foreign Jewish refugees: the Sperber family lived here, arrived from Germany with six children, and a teacher gave private lessons to the youngest, whom the racial laws kept out of school. When the arrest and deportation order came, the podestà and the carabinieri marshal warned them, and the family crossed into Switzerland.
