Castelvisconti

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 330 · Postal code: 26010

The village was called Pratobisio, and it owes its present name to the Visconti: in the fourteenth century Regina della Scala, Bernabò's wife, gave it to the canons of Santa Maria della Scala, the collegiate church in Milan that stood where the theatre stands today. When that church was pulled down to make room for La Scala, part of its furnishings came up here.

They are the great bell, the red marble stoups, the walnut choir stalls, the wrought-iron gate with the Scaliger arms, the wooden statues of the Assumption and of saints Anne and Veronica. They stand in the parish church that the canons began in 1747 and opened in 1772, built high up to be safe from the floods of the Oglio.
