Bordolano

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 621 · Postal code: 26020

In a village of a few hundred souls there is a grand residence with a park around it, put up in the fifteen hundreds by a pope: Gregory XIV, that is Niccolò Sfondrati, had it built for his sister and his Crotti nephews, and it passed later to the marquises Zaccaria. Inside there is a hall frescoed by Sebastiano Galeotti. In the provostal church of San Giacomo, among canvases of the sixteen and seventeen hundreds, hangs a Deposition by Vincenzo Campi datable to about 1570; the facade, on the other hand, is much later, drawn in 1880.

In 1951 Agip found methane under Bordolano and began to bring it up. In March 1952 the well caught fire, and it burned for a month: it was put out by technicians brought over from the United States. Today the village has a factory making copper and steel fittings for heating and plumbing systems, which sells well beyond the Italian borders; and at the end of 2015 nearly one resident in five was a foreigner, as happens in a good many small comuni of this plain. Along the road to Castelvisconti stands the sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve.
