Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, patron of the land of Villa Romei Longhena
📅 Every year, on 24 August
Castenedolo celebrates Saint Bartholomew the Apostle on 24 August, in the church dedicated to him.
The name is traced to the chestnut wood in which the village was built, just as nearby Carpenedolo owes its own to a hornbeam wood. The coat of arms says the same thing: on a blue field a chestnut tree bearing six fruits, rooted in the ground, all in natural colours. The first real settlement goes back to 1037, when emperor Conrad the Salian granted the bishop of Brescia, Olderico, the wooded hill of Castenedolo along with the castle of Brescia and Monte Degno, today Monte Maddalena.
Unlike the flat villages around it, the rise here allowed vines, and the old piantata padana survives in places; the local reds carry the name of Montenetto di Castenedolo. Armies and notable guests passed through: in 1479 Caterina Cornaro, queen of Cyprus, on her way to her brother, the podestà of Brescia, slept in the house that had belonged to the count of Carmagnola; in 1796 Napoleon Bonaparte lodged here and made Palazzo Carrara his headquarters, hastily dictating three orders before leaving for the battle of Lonato.
