The shore the village stands on was manufactured by monks. Sale and Marasino were two distinct municipalities: Marasino lies on the hillside and was already inhabited in Roman times, while Sale is on the lakeside, on a coast that in the Middle Ages was marshy and that the Benedictines drained. Only after that reclamation could Sale grow, and in the sixteenth century the patrician houses and villas were built there that still face the water, from villa Martinengo Villagana to palazzo Averoldi with its frescoes from the school of Romanino.
Behind the built-up area rises Punta Almana, one thousand three hundred and ninety-one metres: it is the highest summit of the whole lake of Iseo and lies within the municipal territory, which runs from up there down to the water. The parish church is dedicated to San Zenone, who by tradition protects fishermen, and was rebuilt between 1737 and 1754 in imitation of the new Cathedral of Brescia. Three thousand three hundred and seventy inhabitants in the province of Brescia; before the silk mills people lived on charcoal, wool and olives.
