In June 2016 the world came to walk on the water at Sulzano. The Floating Piers, Christo's work, was a floating walkway of dahlia yellow joining the village to Monte Isola: for two weeks it was possible to cross lake Iseo on foot, and Sulzano — which has fewer than two thousand inhabitants — found itself at the centre of international attention.
A century earlier, on the same water, the Craven brothers were testing their boats, sons of an English lord related to the royal family and of the Brescian countess Elisa Oldofredi. They spent every summer here, from June to September; the lakeside villas of via Cadorna were all theirs, and they are buried in the private chapel of Santa Elisabetta. The land the town hall stands on was their gift to the comune. Lord Louis built prototype motorboats and sailing boats at Varese and came here to try them out: the sailing boat Gigamone is still kept in a boatyard on Monte Isola. Between the two stories there is a gap: from 1927 to 1947 Sulzano was not a comune, having been aggregated to Sale Marasino.
