Ostiano

Province: Cremona · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,020 · Postal code: 26032

Ostiano is in the province of Cremona but speaks Brescian, and in 2013 it tried to go back. On the sixteenth of June that year a consultative referendum was held asking to transfer to the province of Brescia: the quorum was not reached and the proposal lapsed. The village has in any case changed provinces a good many times: in 1784 Volongo was merged into it and it was called Ostiano con Volongo, in 1786 it ended up in the province of Bozzolo, in 1791 in that of Mantua; Volongo broke away in 1817, and only in 1868 did Ostiano reach Cremona, having passed through the Brescia area first.

In the twentieth century it was an interchange between two tramways: the steam line from Cremona and the electric one from Brescia arrived at two different stations, connected to each other only from 1917, at the request of the Royal Army. In the complex of the fifteenth-century castle stands the synagogue of Ostiano, of the eighteenth century. Together with Volongo, the municipality is one of the two in the province of Cremona lying north of the Oglio. Three thousand and twenty inhabitants.
