Nave fills the Garza valley just above Brescia. The place name seems to come from medieval Latin nava, a basin; the town's arms followed the other reading, the one that hears a ship in the name, and show a Roman ship sailing on a wavy sea of silver and blue. The chief carries the three silver crescents of the Paitoni, the family of that Valerio Paitone who joined the anti-French revolt of February 1512; the following July, Aubigny's Frenchmen sacked the village.

The pleban church of the Annunciation rose in the ninth century over a pagan building, on the Roman road to the Sant'Eusebio pass. Its popular name, pieve della Mitria, is said to come from a high relief unearthed in 1951, a naked man gripping a lion by the forelegs: for Pier Virgilio Begni Redona the find would prove a shrine of the cult of Mithras. In the same church the base of a pillar is a fourth-century marble block carved with a Labour of Hercules. Iron and paper have been worked in the valley since the eleventh century.
