Saints Nazarius and Celsus, patrons of the Lambro Valley
📅 Every year, on 29 July
Arosio celebrates Saints Nazarius and Celsus on 29 July, in the church dedicated to them.
The name of Arosio has nothing to do with roses: it comes from Arausio, a Gaulish god of waters, the same that lies behind the name of the French Arausio and of the Swiss Arosa and Areuse, all places of streams. And it fits: before the watercourses were piped underground, the village was full of ditches and springs, and today only the Riale ditch is still visible, in stretches, near the Guasto farmstead.
In 1134 the territory was assigned to the Monastero Maggiore of Milan, and from then on the village grew as a court of that convent. After the peace of Constance in 1183 the abbess was granted remarkable powers: to issue laws, to administer property, to settle disputes, to order punishments for thieves and adulterers, to allow or forbid the sale of trees and of the fruits of the land, to delegate command to messengers and consuls. And it was she who, in 1215, promoted the first statutes of the comune of Arosio.
