Feast of Saint Cajetan
📅 Every year, on 7 August
On 7 August Brenna, a municipality of 2,011 inhabitants in the province of Como, celebrates its patron Saint Cajetan of Thiene (san Gaetano di Thiene).
On the coat of arms of Brenna there are four crowns, a tower and two plants, wheat and maize. The crowns are the four families that held the fief — Mandelli, Marliani, Giussani, Crivelli — and the plants say that for centuries the village was nothing but farmland. The tower, on the other hand, no longer exists: the castle that stood here under the Duchy of Milan was passed by Galeazzo Maria Sforza to his brother Polidoro, then to the chancellor Giovanni Molo, and finally to the Pietrasanta, and today not a trace of it is left.
The name comes from further off: from Bren, which in Celtic means chief, while the hamlet of Olgelasca would be the «fenced meadow». The oldest thing still standing is the church of Sant'Adriano, Romanesque, of the eleventh century, which keeps a fresco of the titular saint painted at the beginning of the following one. And in the statutes of the waters and roads of the county of Milan, of 1346, «el locho da Brena con Pozolo» appears among the places charged with keeping the road from Niguarda in order.
