Canzo

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,109 · Postal code: 22035

Canzo is a name botanists know well: here are the type populations of several rare plants — Saxifraga vandellii, Campanula raineri, Primula glaucescens, Viola dubyana, Allium insubricum, Ranunculus fiorii — which is to say that this is the place on which those species were first described. The municipal territory holds three distinct nature reserves under European law, and one of them is the lake of Segrino.

The ground beneath has its own fame as well. Under the locality of Gajum lies a layer of dark sediments rich in organic matter, the so-called fish level, a little more than fifteen metres thick: an exceptional thickness, which allows the crisis and the recovery of marine ecosystems during the greatest anoxic event the oceans have ever gone through to be read at very high resolution. The name of the village, on the other hand, comes from the Celtic canto-, "edge, rim, corner", and it describes well where it stands: Canzo is the northern tip of the Brianza.
