At Lemna there are two massi avelli, the tombs hollowed out of boulders that are found here and there on this side of the lake. One stands in the middle of the village and has been turned into a fountain basin; the other ended up in a field, damaged by accident during building work. The three upper hamlets were already linked in the Middle Ages by the Strada Regia, which ran from Brunate to Bellagio along the mountainside.

On the night between 16 and 17 October 1863 a landslide swept away the houses of Riva di Lemna and killed thirty-five people. The municipality as we know it, however, was born in 1928, when Molina and Palanzo were joined to Lemna: on the coat of arms the three stars are the three villages, and the three peaks are the Palanzone, the Pizzo dell'Asino and the Bollettone.
