Feast of Saint George
📅 Every year, on 23 April
On 23 April Laglio, a municipality of 917 inhabitants in the province of Como, celebrates its patron Saint George, to whom the town's church is dedicated; the town has Villa Oleandra.
Laglio has 917 inhabitants on the western shore of Lake Como, on a strip of land between the water and Monte Colmegnone. The name comes from a Roman commander, Lallius, and the hamlet of Torriggia from turris, the watchtower: the via Regina passed through here, linking the river port of Cremona with Chiavenna by way of Milan, and it was the Roman colonists who terraced these slopes and planted the vine and the olive on them. On the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in the Vatican the village is there, and it is called Lalio.
In the statutes of Como of 1335 Laglio appears for one precise duty: keeping in order the piece of the via Regina as far as the gully that divides it from Brienno. On the coat of arms, beside the stars of the hamlets and the water of the lake, there is a cogwheel: it stands for the wire-mesh factories, which today have almost all closed, as the boatyards have gone and as fishing is by now a memory. On 27 July 2021 a cloudburst tore half a million cubic metres of debris off the mountain, and it came straight down into the village.
