The name comes from the Latin personal name Apponius with the suffix -anus, while «Lario» is the learned name of Lake Como. Pognana and neighbouring Quarzano already appear on the map of the Duchy of Milan painted in the Gallery of Maps of the Vatican palaces, where they are written Pognano and Quarāntano. The comune's perimeter, as often in Lombardy, has not stood still: in 1807 a Napoleonic decree annexed Lemna and Palanzo to it, and the village went from little more than four hundred inhabitants to nine hundred and ninety-six in 1809; the Restoration cancelled the whole thing and the old figures came back.
The coat of arms, granted in the twentieth century, says three very concrete things: the sun for the good climate, the lake at the bottom, and a cock, which stands there for the poultry farms common in the comune. At Rovasco the church of San Miro has changed its dedication three times: it belonged to Saints Nazarius and Celsus, then to the Immaculate, and took its present name when the altar of San Miro was brought here from a church further down, deconsecrated in the eighteenth century. Above the village, the Buco di Premen is a fissure in the rock that connects the mule track with the Valassina.
