Figino Serenza

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,226 · Postal code: 22060

The name of Figino may be the cheapest monument ever raised to anyone. In the fourteenth century Pietro Figino, of a Milanese family that had a house on the hill, was charged by Gian Galeazzo Visconti with building a covered arcade in Milan for the duke's wedding to Isabelle of Valois; according to the likeliest account it was the inhabitants who, wishing to honour him and having no means to raise him a monument, gave his name to the cluster of houses and farmsteads scattered over this hill.

The Serenza, which the village only took into its name in 1862, is the stream that cuts the territory in two: its banks are so steep that no settlement ever grew in the valley, and for centuries it was everyone's water supply, until industrial discharges ruined it after the Second World War. Of the Roman presence, on the other hand, three names remain: in 1877 gravestones were found bearing the names Quintus Veroccius Castritius, Quintus Cornelius Treptonicus and Minucius Croesus.
