Novedrate

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,873 · Postal code: 22060

The village villa has changed trade twice in fifty years. Baron Rinaldo Casana, who owned it, was elected first mayor of Novedrate in 1951, when the municipality regained its autonomy from Carimate, and stayed in office until his death in 1973; immediately afterwards the villa passed to IBM, which made it its training centre for data-processing technicians. Since 2006, in those same buildings, the e-Campus online university has had its seat: from the baron to the computers to distance learning, in the same park.

The thing the village is known for beyond its borders, however, is made by hand: lace has been produced here for generations, and in even years Novedrate hosts an international lace exhibition, with delegations from half the world. The name remains uncertain: perhaps from a noventulum, that is a fallow, a field newly brought under the plough, perhaps from an old personal name with the suffix -ate typical of the area. Novedrate appears for the first time in a document of 1017. Two thousand eight hundred and seventy-three inhabitants in the province of Como.
