Our Lady Immaculate and Saint George, patrons of Carimate
📅 Every year, on 13 June; on 8 September the Feast of the Madonna dell'albero
Carimate celebrates the Blessed Virgin Immaculate, patron, and Saint George, co-patron, on 13 June.
In 1434 duke Filippo Maria Visconti made a present of the fief of Carimate to Giorgio Aicardi, known as Scaramuzza, because he had uncovered a conspiracy by Milanese nobles against the duke's life. That was not all: out of gratitude he was also granted the right to add the Visconti surname to his own. A well-placed denunciation was worth an entire village and a new name. The castle around which the village had grown was built in 1345, when the fief passed to the lords of Milan, and around it multiplied the farmers' houses, the stables and the servants' quarters.
Four thousand three hundred and twenty-seven inhabitants in the province of Como, on the first moraine hills west of the Brianza, in the valley of the Seveso. The castle was refashioned in neo-Gothic style in 1874 by the architect Ercole Balossi Merlo, and is today a hotel. The sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Albero, built in 1517 over an older private chapel, holds a fresco attributed to Bergognone. The municipal boundaries have changed a good deal: twice in 1928 alone, first with the annexation of Novedrate and then with the transfer of a piece of territory to Cantù; Novedrate became a separate municipality again in 1950.
