Saint Stephen, patron of the land of the Groane Park
📅 Every year, on 26 December
Fino Mornasco celebrates Saint Stephen on 26 December, in the church dedicated to him.
The first half of the name is thought to come from the Latin finis, boundary: the village would have marked the limit between the lands of Como and Milan. The second half arrived after Italian unification, when the council added it to avoid confusion with Fino del Monte, near Bergamo. Mornasco comes from mornee, the miller in the dialect of Como, and stands for a long tradition of watermills: some were working in the Seveso valley by the ninth century.
In the park of Villa Raimondi, on 24 January 1860, Giuseppe Garibaldi married Giuseppina Raimondi in the family chapel: the marriage was over within an hour, once the groom learned of his wife's lover and left the wedding lunch. In the nineteenth century the town had a workshop of chasers making sacred furnishings, medals and badges. Born here in 1839, Giovanni Battista Scalabrini became bishop of Piacenza and founded the missionaries named Scalabrinians after him, for Italian emigrants; Pope Francis declared him a saint.
