Vertemate con Minoprio

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 3,982 · Postal code: 22070

In 1125, during the ten-year war between Como and Milan, the men of Vertemate made the mistake of getting in the way. The Comaschi were returning to the city after breaking the Milanese siege, and the men of Vertemate hindered their march and held them in check for a long time; when reinforcements arrived, the Comaschi laid siege to the castle where the attackers had taken refuge and forced them to surrender. The village was sacked and largely destroyed. When the war ended and Como fell, the whole territory passed to Milan anyway, which imposed heavy tributes: the resistance had been for nothing.

Three thousand nine hundred and eighty-two inhabitants in the province of Como, in the Brughiera Briantea. The abbey of San Giovanni, consecrated in 1096, is Romanesque with a nave and two aisles and keeps fragments of fourteenth and fifteenth-century frescoes; beside it there is a perennial spring of drinking water. As for the other name, Minoprio, the Como statutes of 1335 give Minovrio, and some interpretations trace it to a Roman sacred place dedicated to Minerva, as is thought to have happened at Minerbio or Manerbio. In the fields there were mulberries for silk; today there are nurseries.
