Casnate con Bernate

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,915 · Postal code: 22070

At Casnate, in the quarter called della Torre, there rises a square building of some height: in all likelihood it is what remains of a signal tower, which served to link the castle of Vertemate with the Baradello of Como. The name of the village comes perhaps from a Cassinus, perhaps from the chestnut tree; on the coat of arms, indeed, there is a chestnut sprig, copied from a sixteenth-century seal kept in the Civic Museum of Como.

Bernate, the other half of the comune, changed its name several times: it was Bernate con Gussa, then simply Bernate, then Bernate di Como, and from 1912 Bernate Rosales, after the Ordoño de Rosales family, who were the largest landowners here. That name lasted twenty-five years: in 1937 the two comuni were abolished and joined into one. The black lion that stands on the coat of arms beside the chestnut comes precisely from the arms of the Rosales.
