Saint Martin, patron of the Shrine of Sant'Anna
📅 Every year, on 11 November
Cadorago celebrates Saint Martin on 11 November, in the church dedicated to him.
Tradition derives the name from an old inn, the Cà del Drago; another explanation invokes Roman settlers, but recent studies trace it to a Celtic root meaning fortified place, as in many villages hereabouts. In the appendices to the statutes of Como of 1335 the comune loci de Cadorago appears beside those of Castellino and Burgariburgallo, all within the pieve of Fino: the three villages that in 1928 would become one again, Cadorago with Caslino al Piano and Bulgorello.
Of Bulgorello the old scholars said it had been founded by the Bulgars along with nearby Bulgarograsso, and the name comes down by stages: Bulgariburgallo, Bulgharo, Bulgarello. In the registers of the tithes gathered for the wars of Boniface VIII there is a priest from here, Otto, chaplain of Cadorago, listed among those who had not paid. On the arms, beside the front of the church of San Martino, stands a mulberry: the crop that ruled this land, together with the rearing of silkworms.
