Montano Lucino

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 4,775 · Postal code: 22070

The stronghold of Lucino was of Gallic origin and stood with Como against Milan. The Milanese did not take it by storm: they came into it through the betrayal of one Arialdo Advocato, and in 1242 they razed it to the ground. It must have stood where the courtyard known in dialect as Curt dei Vincenzitt is today. The name Lucino is thought to come from lucus, the sacred wood, or from a Licinius; that of Montano, more simply, from montanus, mountainous.

It is believed that the first Neolithic village of the Como area stood right here: so say some fragments of pottery found in the territory, and flints older still. Much later, in 1928, Montano and Lucino were joined into a single comune. Of the past there remain the former collegiate church of Santa Maria, which already appears in the accounts of the tithe called for by pope Boniface VIII at the end of the thirteenth century, and the ruins of a twelfth-century villa, in the middle of a park of thirty hectares.
