San Fermo della Battaglia

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 7,380 · Postal code: 22042

On this spot stood the village of Nullate, whose -ate ending suggests a Celtic foundation; between the tenth and eleventh centuries the name became Vergosa, and Vergosa the municipality remained until 1911, when it took the name of the battle fought there. In 1652 the community had bought itself out of feudal tenure, paying in instalments still running in the eighteenth century. Since 2017, after a referendum, it has absorbed neighbouring Cavallasca.

On 27 May 1859 Giuseppe Garibaldi's Cacciatori delle Alpi clashed here with the Austrian garrison of Como under general Karl von Urban: part of it was posted at the church of San Fermo, and the sanctuary's bell tower served as a lookout. The fight was short and hard; the Austrians fell back on Como and abandoned the city soon after. A monument on via de Cristoforis marks where captain Carlo De Cristoforis fell with thirteen other volunteers. The sanctuary and that monument are also the town's coat of arms.
