Grandate

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 2,862 · Postal code: 22070

A district of Grandate is called San Pos, and the name is a contraction of Sanctorum pausa, the pause of the saints. In 1164 archbishop Rainald of Dassel was taking the relics of the Magi back to Cologne, carried off two years earlier from the basilica of Sant'Eustorgio during the destruction of Milan, and here the procession stopped to rest. From that pause was born a place name that has lasted more than eight hundred years.

In via Verdi there still stands the building that was the parish church of San Bartolomeo: three merchants from Blevio had built it in 1306, it served as the village church from 1578 until 1927, and then it was deconsecrated and turned into a joiner's shop. The sanctuary of the Madonna della Noce, on the other hand, stands where in Roman times there was a fortification watching over the via Regina. In the municipal arms is a crystal vase with ears of wheat in it: the crystal for the village's glassworks, the wheat for the fields. Two thousand eight hundred and sixty-two inhabitants in the province of Como.
