Montemezzo

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 261 · Postal code: 22010

In the statutes of Como of 1335 the village is called comune de Medio montis Surici and has a precise duty: to keep in order a stretch of the via Regina, the lake road. The territory then fell within the upper Three Pievi, which in 1497 were given in fief to Lucrezia Crivelli, in 1545 to the Medeghino and from 1580 to the Gallio.

The parish church of San Martino, of the fifteenth century, was enriched for centuries with money sent home by the people of Montemezzo who had emigrated to Ancona and to Sicily: inside there are canvases by Giovanni Mauro della Rovere and Cristoforo Caresana. At Montalto, in a panoramic spot over the upper lake, stands the oratory of San Lorenzo, raised at the beginning of the twentieth century probably as a vow.
