Feast of Saints Peter and Paul
📅 Every year, on 29 June; Saint Roch on 16 August
On 29 June Vercana, a municipality of 751 inhabitants in the province of Como, celebrates its patrons Saints Peter and Paul; on 16 August comes the feast of Saint Roch.
In the annexes to the Statutes of Como of 1335 the «comunia de Vercana et de Livo» are charged with maintaining a stretch of the via Regina: the one running between the middle pier of Vercana and the path by which one enters the vineyard of Stefano Caza of Domaso. A public duty measured against a private vineyard. Vercana then followed the fortunes of the pieve of Gravedona: in 1497 it lay in the fief of Nesso that Ludovico il Moro gave to Lucrezia Crivelli, and later in the fief of the Tre Pievi, with Sorico and Dongo. The three red crosses on the arms are those Tre Pievi.
For more than two centuries people emigrated from here to Sicily, and above all to Palermo: the proof hangs in the parish church, which keeps works by Antonio Maria Caraccioli, called Caracciolo da Vercana, active in Palermo from 1770. Above the village, at Carate, the sanctuary of the Madonna della Neve was built in 1630 in thanks for the end of the plague. The comune itself has been swallowed twice: annexed to Domaso by Napoleon and freed again by the Restoration, then joined to Domaso with Livo in 1928, until 1950, when it became autonomous once more.
