Sorico

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,234 · Postal code: 22010

On the hillside of Sorico small clusters of olive trees still grow: they are the northernmost in Europe. Below, the village stands where the Mera enters the lake, at the meeting point of the upper Lario, the Valtellina and the Valchiavenna, and together with Gravedona and Dongo it formed the Republic of the Three Pievi.

The pieve of Sorico was born in 1432 out of the end of another: that of Olonio, the late Roman settlement in the Pian di Spagna which the floods of the Adda destroyed again and again. In 1497 Ludovico il Moro granted the Three Pievi in fief to Lucrezia Crivelli. And in 1751 the centre of Sorico counted forty inhabitants in all, while administering a territory full of farmsteads.
