Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 16 August
On 16 August Pigra, a municipality of 266 inhabitants in the province of Como, celebrates its patron San Rocco.
There are two ideas about the name: that it comes from the Latin populus, the poplar, or that it refers to the vines, which here ripened later than elsewhere — lazy vines. The village stands at eight hundred and eighty metres on a terrace open over Lake Como, and you reach it by road or by the cable car from Argegno, which in five minutes climbs five hundred and forty metres at a gradient of seventy-one per cent.
In the oratory of San Rocco, shut in among the houses, the painter Salvatore Pozzi frescoed the end wall in 1662 with the Madonna and six saints. In 1848 the parish priest don Cavalli took part in Andrea Brenta's rising against the Austrians and had to go into exile. At the edge of the village the building of the Workers' Society still stands.
