Laino exported artists and trained them at home. From the Middle Ages to the 18th century it gave birth to whole families of Intelvi masters, the most celebrated of the maestri comacini, who worked all over Italy and Europe; at the end of the 17th century the painters Giulio Quaglio the Elder and Giulio Quaglio the Younger founded a drawing school here, and from 1750 a regular school, the Società di Belle Arti, taught the young of the valley. In the parish church of San Lorenzo, which holds works by Barberini and Antonio Crespi, Giulio Quaglio is also buried. In the 18th century the village housed the valley's pretura and podesteria, and the seat of the Consiglio Generale Intelvense, disputed with Pellio Inferiore, was assigned to it by order of count Melchiorre Riva-Andreotti.

The oldest record is a tomb inscription: a Milanese subdeacon named Marcelliano had a castle built in 556 at San Vittore, on the edge of the plateau. In the 7th century it is said to have been a Byzantine castrum, under the Lombards it belonged to the iudicaria of the Seprio, and after the Ten Years' War, in which Laino sided with Como, it passed to the Trivulzio of Milan. Around 1400 the oratory of San Vittore was built on the walls of that castle, with a portico frescoed in the 15th century and a portal of 1587; inside are stuccoes and statues by Gian Battista Barberini and paintings by Domenico Quaglio. In the portico, to the left of the door, stands an altar on which every 8 May, for the patron's feast, bread is laid to be blessed. Under the Lombardo-Veneto kingdom Laino was the secret operational centre of the Giovine Italia Intelvese.
