Rodero

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 1,210 · Postal code: 22070

In 1668 Rodero bought its freedom: it obtained redemption from enfeoffment, that is, the right not to have a feudal lord over its head. It was not a single payment but a debt by instalments — one payment every fifteen years into the coffers of the Duchy of Milan — and in 1751 the village was still paying it off.

The parish church of Saints Simon and Jude has a rare plan: two naves side by side, with the door in line with the high altar, a proto-Romanesque solution found almost nowhere else. The Swiss border is a few kilometres away, and during the Risorgimento that came in useful: the people of Rodero helped some of Garibaldi's men cross to the other side.
