Saints Peter and Paul, patrons of Uggiate-Trevano
📅 Every year, on 19 March
Uggiate-Trevano celebrates Saints Peter and Paul on 19 March, in the church dedicated to them.
On the moraine ridge of Uggiate two torrents rise and run in opposite directions. The Lura springs at Pignora, right against the Swiss border, and flows south until it joins the Olona near Rho; the branches of the Faloppia, on the other hand, run north and leave Italy, ending in the Breggia at Chiasso. It is not a quirk: in the Quaternary a slide of sand and clay blocked the val Mulini and forced the Faloppia to look for an outlet on the wrong side. At Pignora there is also a pedestrian border crossing, closed in 1983 and reopened only for special occasions since the nineteenth of March 2011.
Four thousand four hundred and fifty-one inhabitants in the province of Como, on the moraine hills shaped by the last glaciation at the foot of Monte Generoso. The two settlements appear in documents in 748 and 852 as Oglato and Trebano: the first name is now traced back to a Celtic tribe, the Uglates, with the -ate suffix typical of Lombardy; the second to the Lombard word trewa, meaning camp. Since the first of January 2024 the municipality of Uggiate-Trevano no longer exists as such: it merged with Ronago into the new municipality of Uggiate con Ronago, of which Uggiate is the seat.
