Feast of San Bartolomeo
📅 Every year, on 24 August
On 24 August San Bartolomeo Val Cavargna, a municipality of 1,041 inhabitants in the province of Como, celebrates its patron San Bartolomeo.
This municipality has been abolished and remade twice. In 1812 Napoleon, who wanted to merge the smaller communes of the Kingdom of Italy, incorporated it into San Nazzaro; in 1816 the Austrians undid the union, and the first town council was elected in 1821. Then, between 1928 and 1950, the two villages were a single municipality again, and again they separated. Until 1863 it was called simply San Bartolomeo: the qualifier Val Cavargna was given to it by a royal decree of 8 February of that year. The coat of arms, on the other hand, arrived only in 2025, with four stars for the districts of Calbino, Sora, Vora and Tavaino and a dagger for the patron saint.
The church too has a history of replacements. The old parish church, a large one, had become unsafe and was demolished in the early twentieth century: only the bell tower was saved, with the date 18 August 1626 carved on it. Between 1909 and 1911 a new one was built, neo-Gothic and facing the opposite way, whose façade nevertheless incorporates that of the demolished building. Inside are two frescoes torn from houses in the districts of Vora and Sora: a Madonna enthroned with the Baptist and Saint Roch, of the fifteenth century, and a Saint Anthony of Padua of the seventeenth.
