Val Rezzo

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 179 · Postal code: 22010

Val Rezzo is a young comune made of two old villages: it came into being in 1928 from the merger of Buggiolo and Seghebbia, and for one year it was called Rezzo Cavargna before taking, in 1929, the name of the valley. It lies at the far north of the Como province and borders three Swiss comuni; before the merger the two villages had passed from province to province and from comune to comune, joined and re-established at every reform, Austrian or Napoleonic.

The trade up here was iron. At Buggiolo a smelting furnace was already alight in 1589 and another worked at Seghebbia at the end of the eighteenth century; when the comune finally gave itself a coat of arms — in 2024, after almost a century of existence — it put a smelting furnace on it, with a rhododendron and two stars for the two hamlets. From the post-war years one figure is worth remembering: don Nemesio Farina, the parish priest, who besides saying mass taught in the primary school and was elected mayor.
