Feast of Saints Nazarius and Celsus
📅 Every year, on 28 July
On 28 July San Nazzaro Val Cavargna, a municipality of 338 inhabitants in the province of Como, celebrates its patrons Saints Nazarius and Celsus (santi Nazario e Celso).
Under Maria Theresa this village at the head of the Val Cavargna was a mining and iron-working centre of the Duchy of Milan: here iron was dug out and worked. In 1812 Napoleon added Cavargna and San Bartolomeo to it; once he fell, the Austrians undid the whole thing, and the long name, Val Cavargna, the village took only in 1863.
Of the old Romanesque church of Saints Nazarius and Celsus the bell tower survives, in bare local stone, with two levels of mullioned windows: one has its tufa capital and its little column, the other merely a stone set crosswise. On the coat of arms there is an ox at pasture, but the town's own statute speaks of a cow: on the animal, the two texts do not agree.
