Tavernerio

Province: Como · Region: Lombardy · Population: 5,705 · Postal code: 22038

The name of Tavernerio in all likelihood comes from a taberna, the inn where travellers stopped along the Roman road that ran from Bergamo to Como; some would instead trace it to the Celtic root Taw-, which is said to mean a place set high up. The comune in its present shape was born in 1928, when Ponzate and Solzago were absorbed into it, and the coat of arms says so openly: three stars for the three settlements, a bear for the animal whose prehistoric traces have been found in the Triangolo Lariano, a cornucopia for abundance.

The Cosia, the stream that crosses the village, has left the worst memory: in 1951 its flood killed sixteen people. In the upper part of the old centre stands the church of San Martino, built where the medieval castle once was; it holds a silver cross of 1592, engraved with the burin by Gasparo Mola, and on a low wall outside someone, at a time nobody can name, cut a series of boards for noughts and crosses.
